jcapeverde, I've seen your name before, you post on the "P." I used to post on there years ago - people also know me as BigWill. Nice to see a fellow househead that loves the old skool gear. You've posted some good history here on the old skool stores.
jcapeverde - April 20, 2009 - Mark this comment as inappropriate
I live on the Hill. Some of my closest boys was from the Drive - Honeys too! LOL Yeah Big Will, I'm still on the "P", though not as much as I used to be. I'm gonna post a pic I found of a Blye label so you know what it looks like if you ever come across one. This got me thinking about old shoe stores. A ssomeone mentioned before, Florsheim was was the Playboy spot in Hempstead when I came up. Some of the Drive bros broke in & wiped out every pair back in 1970! LOL Lefcourt Shoes on Madison also had some sweet shoes. They also had reissued Playboys in the late 70's early 80's. Around the same time as McCreedy & Schreiber. I was thinking about the old Orchard Street. There was a old Black tailor, Mr. Brown on Allen Street. He'd make any kind of pants for $35 & put any kind of flaps on too. The criss cross, gun holster, round corners, hidden buttons, etc. What I miss are the wide wale corduroys with the Persian Lamb pocket flaps. Some people don't even know what Persian Lamb is! I went into Below The Belt years ago & asked a guy about putting it on a leather. This so-called "salesman" didn't know what the f**k I was talking about. Chump! Also anybody remember the Omega pants? No belt loops with the tab that had the Omega sign on them? Used to get them Uptown in Mohair, also on D street & Reval Knox on Jamaica Ave. I hated pants with belt loops. All my pants had to be western pockets in front, flaps on the back pockets & NO BELT LOOPS! It seems like tailoring is a lost art. Guys with felonies could be in business for themselves if they knew how to sew! Double Promo, you remember Grad's Cleaners on the Heights on Clinton across from Brierly Park? That old cat could sew his azz off! He did work on some leather pants for me. They were a little too peg leg. He split the seam, took a piece of the cut off hem & placed it in widening the leg. Perfect!

jcape, you're building here like Mike Barnes does (LOL/my man) ...... I don't know much about LI spots as I was born and raised in the South Bronx, and you're a dime older than me so you're mentioning spots I know my older cousins were up on. My early days of shopping were @ Florsheim on 149th Street off of 3rd Ave in the Bronx and all the spots on 3rd Avenue (back in the days of Alexanders and Crazy Eddie's). I also used to shop on Fordham Road (Martin Brothers was the spot - had to get the Lee jeans with the stitched in creases and the ONYX patch on the back pocket). I can't remember exactly when or how I got my first Playboys or British Walkers - didn't have much dough and somewhat resorted to "finding" sneakers and shoes back then. I remember getting my first pair of AJ Lesters from the AJ Lester store on 125th Street (I used to love that store). Was it true that the people that owned AJ Lester also owned Reval Knox and the same type of clothing store that was in Albee Square Mall (I forget the name)? Do you remember the hoodie sweaters that were sold on Jamaica Avenue in the early 80's that had iron-ons of whatever your initial letter was with the Playboy bunny with fake diamond in the eye and your name in chinese letters on the other side of the jacket?
Allnat - April 20, 2009 - Mark this comment as inappropriate
Yo jcape, That's some crazy history man. I only remember a couple of the stores you mentioned and that's only because my uncle used to talk about them all the time. I would love to see one of those Blye shirts, My uncle was just talking about them joints saturday said he used to rock them joint too. I heard about McCreedy's matter of fact I went down there last year they were on 51st and... I think 6th or 8th Ave...somewhere around there. Outta' business now. Who remembers this joint(store) called Dehardest Hard on 125th and what you used to can get outta there :-). Yo Ink, I saw those Davanzatis, those joints are nice just might get them joints. KID,MOOK,ICE,LIFE,DOUBLE P,INK,NEEK, BIG JIZZY,and my man OCIE, HOLLA!!

DAAAAAMN Double P, I remember them iron on letter's and da playboy bunny, was that the same joints kids used to rock wit da iron-on lightning bolts? I had one done that said M.C. Ricky O. LOL. Prome when's the last time you been on Southern B. and Simpson street. They used to have a jew man shop on simpson that used to sell the Lee onyx jeans, the stradlers and the twills. I was up on Fordham day after thanksgiving brought back alot of memories. not much has changed, just the style of gear most of the stores are still there.

Some Cazal's 607 Joints.. Can you believe it. Just picked me up a couple of Stetson's, and going to grab a few more playboys and wallabees soon. My wife think i have flipped, i told her, me and my BWB's are just doing what we do. It may look crazy to her but it sure feel good. Much love to all yall. Lets get this summer bash together.

I remember Dehardest Hard alright! LOL I even had a Harlem All Stars tee with that on it! There's a picture of a V neck Blye I found, but it's not what was popular back in the day. They were finer quality wool Italian knits with suede and/or leather trim and designs. I last saw one in Reval Knox years ago that they must have found in the basement. Lime green 3/4 length, with suede playing card symbols. Spade, heart, club & diamond on the chest and near the waist on either side. One symbol on each section. Leather trim around the collar with a fly front also trimmed in lime green leather. Green leather on the cuffs and trim around the bottom. They wanted $1000 for it, but came down to $600 when I showed some interest. I might've gave them $300, but even that was a lot for a 15-20 year old shirt that they just happened to find. Reval Knox, London Character, Superfly Playboy, Lefcourt shoes had the half gators, which were more affordable, but still expensive compared to regular shoes. They had a gator top and heel (back) but were leather everywhere else. Two tones looked especially nice such as tan/chocolate brn.

Allnat I'm not familiar with those sites you mentioned but I'mma check them out. Mike G, you're talking about the Bally Aden and Alex shoes; the Aden's were the on-the-ankle laceups that were part leather with a suede top and came in lovely colors like olive green, red, blue, black, tan, etc. The Alex were the low-cut tie-ups and slip-ons and then they changed up the style and added a leather thread around the shoe (lawd I used to love the tan ones). Bally stopped making them in the early 90's. When I moved from Ozone Park to East New York back in 2001 I had mistakenly left behind about seven pair of Bally shoes and to this day I regret not taking them with me because they were all in excellent - to near mint condition as I didn't wear them that much at all. I can't help but feel that at some future date someone is gonna get real smart and bring them back out. Mike at Mike's Shoe Plaza has been speaking on this, but for me it ain't official if Bally doesn't do it. Here's a throwback on the Bally's for y'all fellas: New Edition's N.E. HEARTBREAK video - check out they were each wearing one yellow laceup Bally and one black laceup Bally. ......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnEi2MyqBlY .......... and they was catching some fly dance steps too.

Mook way to Xpress yourself and we are backin you 100%. Thats what we are about. BWB's Baby = British Walker Brothers or BROTHERS With BUSINESS, thats what we are about. And just to add to Mook and let you know, we aint giving that Trash no respect and if you are not willing to get this business jumping, then i suggest you STEP. Now back to business, BWB's I've been missing some crazy dialog on the site but trying to play catchup today. Finally got that tenant in the house and wife and I are exhausted but God is good. Last update I had was that someone found the Mock Necks- where ? also ALLNAT, getting em' dyed now, good thinking.. I definately want them burgandy joints. I am here in Virginia and will check around the city to see who has skills in doing that but I dont even think many of these cats know about the Brits so im skeptical. I will check and give the scoop. Also, I have a partner who was with DEF JAMS, he did some work with Queen Latifah and back in the day it was Nikki D'. Daddy's little girl, he produced it. His name is Sidney (S.I.D production) I will try to find his number and see if He has a hook up with BIZ. I suggest we start putting some of our ideas on paper and keep a research listing going of places found that may be of interest. I will kick that off. Also, what yall think about hooking up this summer in NYC?? We have lunch and talk about some IDEAS and of course,.> EAT>. .Well I got to get going, but will chime in daily to engage.. Peace to all my BWB's and to all the spectators, (if you got somethin' worth while, come on in and join us).. Until next time.. peace

There was this polish I used to get back in the day that I used to use on Adidas and suede Pumas to color them. It kinda made the suede look like leather. I hope that you doing the white BW's comes out right because I'd hate for you to mess up a good pair of shoes. I'm leaving for the UK (Manchester) next Wednesday for a music event and a DJ gig (will be there for a week) but I'mma be checking out the stores in the downtown Manchester area to see what I can find out. There are some brotha's over there that love rocking vintage gear like we do - hopefully I'll be able to get a lead on something, whether it's Britishers, or even better, some BALLY's and I'll defo post info on whatever it is I can find out.
Incubatingink - April 27, 2009 - Mark this comment as inappropriate
Yeah I remember, same thing with my Pumas. The site says it will keep the suede soft. The yardies love that vintage gear. In my mind the influx of Jamaicans in the mid 70's is what put a lot of the brothers up on things like Clarks in general wallabee weavers specifically. Depending on the exchange rate you might can catch some Og Plaboys at nice price. What are you spinning over there,Manchester that their house capital yeah? Good luck and have great trip.

It's a party an hour outside of Manchester in a town called Southport called the Southport Weekender that I'm going to; been going there since 2003 - they do the party twice a year. Big name American and US DJ's with a mostly house music scene as I'm a big house head. Started really getting into house in the mid-late 80's especially from listening to Tony Humphries on KISS-FM. While I go to the party I get the occasional gig to play records when I'm out there. The party is off the hook I'll tell you that. Manchester is an absolutely beautiful city and I love getting the chance to go there. Also will have my eye on some of the harder-to-find sneakers seeing as some of the more unique looking Adidas sneakers are in Europe and Asia and hard to get here in the States. And the Brits - oh my gizz can these people party and DRINK like a thirsty fish!
DoublePromo - April 27, 2009 - Mark this comment as inappropriate
Oh yeah, I forgot the name of the polish but if we're talking about the same thing Inc it used to come in a small bottle and it had a small brush head attached to the screw top and it came in mad colors. I gotta dig for some of my old pics again to see if I got one with my shelltoe Adidas colored lime green back in 1983.

OK fellas, gotta create a brief interlude here: www.blackjackskanz.com - don't check the site while at work or when you're girl's around. It's not nude or porn but it's high quality scans of pictures and being that all us brotha's here love old skool fashion - I've no doubt y'all are going to LOVE the pics on the site.
